Time Capsule Ceremony Nov. 9
Date: November 09, 2006
Location: C1-15

Activities surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Health Science Center will culminate with the planting of a time capsule at 3 p.m. Nov. 9 in the courtyard of the Academic Research Building.

The capsule, slated to be unearthed again in another 50 years, will contain the contents of the original time capsule buried in 1956 as well as items that represent what life is like today. The capsule will be covered with a stone and an engraved plaque.

During a short ceremony, Senior Vice President for Health Affairs Doug Barrett will speak and an HSC student singer will perform.

The original capsule was encased in the foundation of the Stetson Medical Science Building.

National Traveling Exhibition on Women In Medicine Slated For UF
Date: August 23 – October 5, 2006

Changing The Face Of Medicine is the title of a new exhibit about women in medicine created by the National Library of Medicine and American Library Association. Over the next several years it will travel the country, and recently the HSC Libraries learned it was one of several libraries chosen to host this powerful exhibit.

The Libraries worked to acquire this exhibit with an impressive collection of HSC, UF&Shands and community groups, all of whom pledged organizational and promotional support. This group includes: the Office of the Senior Vice President, Health Affairs; all six HSC college deans and the CEO of Shands HealthCare; several university and community-based women's health and women's studies organizations; the Alachua County Medical Society; and the UF, Santa Fe Community College and Alachua County libraries.

The exhibit will arrive during celebrations surrounding the joint 50th anniversary of the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, the HSC Libraries and the health center administrative unit (which ultimately became the SVPHA's Office). The display dates are August 23 – October 5, 2006.

Although the exhibit focuses on women physicians, the HSC Libraries invites viewers to discover the many ways that women have influenced and enhanced all areas of health care.

Activities and events planned during the exhibition's display include:

The keynote speech on the history of women in medicine will be presented September 8, 2006, by Regina Morantz-Sanchez, Ph.D., professor of history at the University of Michigan.

More information on the exhibit is available on the National Library of Medicine website at

Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day
Date: November 4, 2005

By November 4, 1955, Elvis Presley had made his first recording prompting his meteoric rise to stardom. By this date, too, construction of the Medical Science Building on the University of Florida campus was well underway with dedication of the cornerstone and time capsule earlier that year. On November 4, 2005, from 11:30-1:30, the Health Science Center will celebrate these milestones with a special lunch thanking our faculty and staff for their loyalty and efforts that have made 50 years of healing and innovation possible. Please join the Health Science Center, Colleges of Medicine and Nursing and the Health Science Center Libraries in this celebration with an opening of the original time capsule from 1955 and a trip back in time. And keep your eyes open for Elvis! Click here for pictures.
